What we do.

Mental Health presentations to Public and private sector/Education (Enhanced CRB checked)

01

Military Mental Health training tailored to your work place.

Aim: Mental Health awareness training.

WHAT WE’LL COVER: What is Mental Health? difference between mental health and mental illness. How to help in the work place, how to look after our own mental health going forward.

IT ALL BEGINS WITH AN IDEA. Mental health awareness is the ongoing effort to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health conditions. Often, because of misconceptions about mental health and mental fitness, people often suffer in silence and their conditions go untreated.

Mental health advocacy can help to address these issues by promoting education and awareness about mental health conditions, and supporting individuals who are affected by mental health challenges.

02

Mental Health Resilience

Aim: Resilience: Build skills to endure hardship

WHAT WE’LL COVER: When something goes wrong, do you tend to bounce back or fall apart?Adapting to tough times, Resilience and mental health, Tips to improve your resilience, When to seek professional advice

IT ALL BEGINS WITH AN IDEA. When you have resilience, you harness the inner strength that helps you rebound from a setback or challenge, such as a job loss, an illness, a disaster or a loved one's death. If you lack resilience, you might get stuck on problems or feel like a victim. You might feel burdened or turn to ways to cope that aren't healthy, such as drug or alcohol use, eating disorders, or risky behaviors.

Resilience won't make your problems go away. But resilience can help you see past them, find ways to enjoy life and better handle stress. If you aren't as resilient as you'd like to be, you can learn skills to become more resilient.

Fighting Spirit can provide Mental Heath presentations to your workplace. We can tailor any requirements to your specific work role.

Basic package of MH Awareness and resilience (half day presentation). With any bolt on that may be appropriate…

Contact Fighting Spirit and we can adjust any training to your needs.

Or go full on and do the lot!!!!! ‘He who dares’.

What IS Mental health?

Mental illness is a leading cause of disability in the UK (1)

The terms “mental health” and “mental illness” are sometimes interchanged, but they differ in meaning. While mental health refers to anyone’s state of mental, emotional well-being, mental illnesses are diagnosed conditions that affect thoughts and behaviours. Though anyone can have moments of poor mental health, not everyone has a mental illness. On the other hand, someone with a mental illness can achieve sound mental health.

What Is Mental Health?

Mental health is all about mental well-being. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), someone who is mentally well can realize their potential, cope with normal stressors and contribute to their community in a productive way. Mental health is about physical, mental, and social well-being. Good mental health allows someone to live a fulfilling, satisfying life while dealing with everyday challenges.

What is Mental Illness?

A mental illness is a diagnosable disorder with a standard set of criteria. It can be caused by factors like genes, brain chemistry or trauma. Anyone can have a mental illness, regardless of age, socioeconomic class, sex or race. These disorders can also be called mental health conditions.

The Difference Between Mental Health and Mental Illness

In essence, mental health and mental illness are not the same. Mental health affects all people, while only some experience diagnosed mental illnesses. It’s helpful to realize that mental illness does not always lead to poor mental health and that poor mental health is not always due to mental illness. Life events or other outside factors can affect anyone’s mental health, whether or not a mental illness is present.

Our Feedback

 1.      I enrolled for the mental health awareness course to make up the numbers in my mind. Very pleasantly surprised as I had been to similar names courses in the past and this was very good and helpful. I really enjoyed the course; it was very engaging and I have taken numerous techniques away with me.

2.      I attended a mental health talk delivered by Fighting Spirit Mental Health and found it to be very good. The talk was very engaging, informative and well delivered. It gave you more of an insight into mental health and the reasons behind it and ways of dealing with symptoms. Well recommended!

3.      The mental health and well-being awareness session was incredibly insightful and empowering and was a refreshing change from the usual sessions that have ex sports personalities sharing their experiences. The session emphasised the importance of self-reflection and being in tune with our own mental state, raising the awareness of recognising early symptoms of mental health struggles not only in others but in ourselves as well, learning how to identify subtle signs of stress, anxiety or burnout before they escalate into more serious concerns. As a mental health first aider, this is something I hadn’t fully appreciated before, understanding that taking care of my own mental well-being is just as important as supporting others. The grounding, breathing and relaxation techniques the presenter taught us were very simple but effective.

4.      I participated in the mental health session. The event provided valuable insights into recognising the symptoms of mental health challenges, as well as information about the resources and tools available for support. The session was highly engaging and offered practical strategies for improving mental well-being.

5.      Just to thank you for the great training sessions provided. The expertise and knowledge of the subject matter has been invaluable in helping to understand and apply what we’ve learned.

6.      Just wanted to highlight how good the mental health morning from Fighting Spirit at the Whitehaven golf course was. Really informative, engaging and reassuring. I really hope everyone attends this and gets something out of it.

Steve Crabbe

Steve’s career in the armed forces has a varied and unique path. Joining the Army as a Royal Engineer (RE), Steve has deployed as part of the field army in numerous theatres of operation around the world. Mid way through his career in the RE he re-modelled his forces career to become a military mental health professional working within a Department of Community Mental Health (DCMH). Since leaving the forces in 2016 Steve has worked for the NHS across an array of different departments, Mental Health Crisis Teams, Street Triage (Mental Health Support to the Emergency Services), Community Mental Health and Acute Mental Health ward settings to further his knowledge of mental health.

Steve has a somewhat unique insight into forces life, and the stresses and strains that Deployments/Combat can have on Mental Health, as well as assessing, provisionally diagnosing, occupational guidance to Chains of command and ultimately treating numerous individuals across the years.

Steve is a family man with 2 x young children. His most recent ‘family’ deployment was traveling across Europe with his family for 7 months in their Motor Home. Leaving the rat race behind, but also dealing with all the different stresses that living on the road then created along the way. (Very few stresses!).
